New CodeNEXT draft #2 coming Sept 15

#1

In a couple of weeks the city will be releasing a new draft of CodeNEXT: http://austintexas.gov/blog/glimpse-changes-you-can-expect-codenext-draft-2

Once that draft is released, Friends of Heritage will review it and update our https://www.friendsofheritage.org/codenext/codenext-proposal/ based upon changes in the draft. We are also setting up meetings with city staff to discuss our proposal. The city will be taking feedback in September and October and it is critical that we are engaged during that time. We’ll keep you in the loop.

CodeNEXT was also a cover story on the Community Impact newsletter that you might have gotten on your doorstep yesterday: https://communityimpact.com/austin/city-county/2017/08/29/double-vision-austin-struggles-square-codenext-older-neighborhood-plans/

I was interviewed for the article and spent a half hour explaining to the reporter our proposal and how Heritage was the only UT area neighborhood to receive T4 zoning in its interior. The only part that was used was in the print addition where they accurately quoted me as saying that I believed neighborhood plans and the code should be revisited in light of Austin’s growth, but they left out the rest of the context around that statement. I agree with David King’s comment in the article that existing plans need to be reconciled with Imagine Austin but those changes need to occur as part of an involved process with the neighborhoods. That’s exactly why Friends of Heritage will be engaging with the city.
